The New Jersey building code requirements for first floor egress windows are a 3 foot high by 4 foot wide window with a net clear opening of 20 inches high and 20 inches wide. Egress windows on the second floor or higher must be 3 foot high by 4-1/2 foot wide and with a net clear opening of 24-by-20 inches.

The minimum size of their clear opening is 20 inches wide by 24 inches high. The minimum net clear opening size is 5.7 square feet, or 5 square feet for ground floor windows. Egress window sills can be a maximum of 44 inches above the floor; however, their target height is 42 inches above the floor.

1030.2 Minimum Size. Emergency escape and rescue openings shall have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 square feet (0.53 m 2 ). Exception: The minimum net clear opening for grade -floor emergency escape and rescue openings shall be 5 square feet (0.46 m 2 ).

There shall not be projections into the required clear width lower than 34 inches (864 mm) above the floor or ground. Projections into the clear opening width between 34 inches (864 mm) and 80 inches (2032 mm) above the floor or ground shall not exceed 4 inches (102 mm).
